I spent the last few months of 2021 catching up on reading commitments and finally managed to in December. This year, I’m looking forward to mood-reading my way through my to-be-read list, as well as discovering new titles. Mood reading has already taken me to some strange and exciting worlds, with the brutal but magical The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott and the heartfelt oddball Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki.
Since I’m almost as passionate about book collecting as I am about reading, my own bookshelves are the obvious starting place. So, I thought I’d share the top 10 series that I own (or fully intend to) that I’m most looking forward to reading.
Instead of typing out why I want to read each series (for the third time, thanks to WordPress), I’ll include the plot summary for the first book in the series, and indicate whether it has caught my interest because of the plot, cover or because it’s been highly recommended. Enjoy!

The Daevabad Trilogy by S. A. Chakraborty

Publisher: HarperVoyager
Publication Date: 14 November 2017
Page Count: 545 pages
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.
But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.
In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.
After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for…

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…
A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering
And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.
They’re not the heroes we deserve. They’re just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio

Publisher: Gollancz
Publication Date: 21 March 2019
Page Count: 624 pages
It was not his war.
On the wrong planet, at the right time, for the best reasons, Hadrian Marlowe started down a path that could only end in fire. The galaxy remembers him as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives–even the Emperor himself–against Imperial orders.
But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier.
Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world. Forced to fight as a gladiator and navigate the intrigues of a foreign planetary court, he will find himself fighting a war he did not start, for an Empire he does not love, against an enemy he will never understand.
Why I’m excited: Cover, plot, highly recommended (the first book is divisive, but apparently the series is really rewarding if you stick with it)

The Poppy War Series by R. F. Kuang

Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository | Waterstones | Bookshop.org
Publisher: HarperVoyager
Publication Date: 03 May 2018
Page Count: 545 pages
When Rin aced the Keju – the test to find the most talented students in the Empire – it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who had hoped to get rich by marrying her off; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free from a life of servitude. That she got into Sinegard – the most elite military school in Nikan – was even more surprising.
But surprises aren’t always good.
Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Fighting the prejudice of rival classmates, Rin discovers that she possesses a lethal, unearthly power – an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of psychoactive substances and a seemingly insane teacher, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive – and that mastering these powers could mean more than just surviving school.
For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most people calmly go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away…

I loved the first two books in the Quantum Evolution by Derek Kunsken 😀 The Poppy War is the best fantasy novel I read last year and I’m currently reading (and enjoying very much) its sequel. 🙂

I’m terrible at finishing series unless I’m passionate about them. I’ve started a lot of these, though! I own all three books in Dyrk Ashton’s series and would love to get to them😁
